 Sleep Apnea - Why Suffer In Silence



It is commonplace for a lot of individuals to suffer at least an occasional night of almost non-existent rest. The causes of sleeplessness differ from person to person. What caused a kid insomniac varies from what made a shift worker or a tourist or an employee to get such sleeping problem.

Insomnia, that is the inability to fall asleep satisfactorily or to have any sleep at all, is one of the most commonly encountered sleeping disorders. It is recognized by uneasiness, sleep disruptions, reduced sleeping time than the usual, or at times complete wakefulness.

Besides the annoyance that sleeplessness may cause to its sufferers, this sleep disorder causes those afflicted to lose commitment and energy, acquire memory and concentration problems, feel fatigued, frustrated, and of course tired. Even worse cases that might be caused by sleeplessness is one's being susceptible to mishaps, reduced work efficiency and the aggravation of psychological and medical ailments.

So what exactly are the culprits that make sleeplessness one menacing sleeping disorder?

1. Emotional Distress

More particularly when it is from internalized stress or frustration, emotional problems can easily induce this sleep problem.

2. Substance Abuse

Drinking excessive coffee, colas or other "energy-upper beverages" could induce sleeplessness. Caffeine from these drinks is the primary reason. 3. Biological Clock Disruption.

Also referred to as circadian rhythm, the body clock, when re-structured, can harm the amount of sleep one can peacefully enjoy. This body clock disruption can be caused by an irregular slumber schedule because of too much siesta or partying too let into the evening. It can also be jetlag or body clock disturbance due to traveling by airplane to some place where there is a different time zone. Other causes could be the grave yard schedules of workers and cramming review season for students induced by exams.

4. Environmental Factors

Extreme temperatures can interrupt one's sleeping patterns. Noise and bright lights may have the same effect too. Homesickness or when one is forced to sleep in an unfamiliar place is also one cause of getting into the habit of not having enough sleep.

5. Health Problems

Health problems such as diabetes, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, stomach problems, and Parkinson's disease can also induce sleeplessness. Asthma can also be one health problem that makes one vulnerable to insomnia as a consequence of an asthmatic's shortness of breath. Frequent urination, heartburn, and chronic ache from leg cramps, tooth ache and arthritis can also cause sleeplessness.

Psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and depression are also possible causes for sleeplessness. Snoring with prolonged pauses in breathing while sleeping, also called sleep apnea can also induce sleeplessness. Periodic arm and leg movements during sleep causing the muscle tissues to twitch too much is one main cause of this sleep problem. One more cause is narcolepsy or one's lack of control on whether they should stay awake or get to sleep, is yet another cause of this sleep problem.

6. Pre-bedtime Activities

Engaging to vigorous activities like exercise just right before bedtime can deprive one of a good night's sleep. Taking in large meals when one is just about to sleep can also make one experience this sleep disorder. This is because when metabolic process is at its most active thus the body prompts one to stay awake.
